NEW YORK – A head-spinning array of star-power gathered at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on 2 May for the Costume Institute Gala. Hosted by Vogue's Anna Wintour, New York’s most exclusive fundraiser celebrates the Met’s annual fashion exhibition. This year’s show is Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology, a brainy and gorgeous meditation on clothing sewn by hand (namely, couture) with machine-made garments and the frequent blurring of those techniques. The fusion of the two was striking on the red carpet, observed our jewellery expert Frank Everett. The evening's looks frequently juxtaposed handmade vintage jewels with high-tech fabrics: an Art Deco cuff on the arm of an actress wearing custom Louis Vuitton, for example. "It was a great night for jewellery," remarked Everett. Click ahead for Frank’s favourite looks.
