PARIS – Known among his peers the “prince of dealers,” Paris antiques legend Bernard Steinitz (1933–2012) spent his life hunting for the most exquisite decorative arts from the 17th and 18th centuries. As evidenced by the splendour of his establishment in Paris’s 8th arrondissement and the discerning collectors swarming his booth at international art fairs, Steinitz’s taste was unfailing and his scholarship vast. On 30 June, Sotheby’s Paris is offering more than 170 pieces from his collection and that of Benjamin, his son, who has long embraced the family’s trade. An homage to a titan of his métier, the auction is as much an opportunity to own works of historical and artistic importance as it is to partake in Steinitz’s incomparable legacy.
