Dear Friends and Clients,

I’m writing today to invite you to the extraordinary exhibition and sale of the Weldon Collection, which will be on view at our York Avenue galleries beginning this coming Friday, with the auction next Wednesday morning, April 22nd.  As the timeframe is a little bit unusual for Old Masters, I thought it worth saying that this will be one of the most remarkable and unique exhibitions we’ve ever done.  I believe that both the quality of the paintings and the collection as a whole make it very much worth a visit during the next week.

Henry and June “Jimmy” Weldon were passionate New York collectors who put together a remarkable group of paintings over 60 years, centered around but not limited to Dutch and Flemish 17th century pictures.  Highlights include still lifes by Adriaen Coorte, Balthasar van der Ast, Ludger Tom Ring, and Ambrosius Bosschaert, views by Hendrick Avercamp, Jacob van Ruisdael, Frans Post, and Aelbert Cuyp, as well as works by Jean-Antoine Watteau, Sir Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, and many others. It is truly an honor for us to offer this important collection at Sotheby’s.

At the same time as the Weldon sale, we also have exhibitions for our Magnificent Jewelry sale as well as the Designer Showhouse, where 13 designers have curated distinctive rooms in a house using fine and decorative works of art from a wide range of collecting categories.

We look forward to seeing you in our galleries and if there are any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Yours truly,

George Wachter
