The Value of Art brings together key lots from Sotheby’s forthcoming auctions into an exhibition exploring the emotional and aesthetic significance of art. In addition there will be a weekend of public talks on everything from Castle Howard to Meissen porcelain; Ernest Shackleton to contemporary art. Speakers include explorer Conrad Dickinson; Reino Liefkes, head of ceramics at the V&A; Daniel Robbins, senior curator of the Leighton House Museum; artist Martha Fiennes; and Clive Aslet, Editor-at-Large of Country Life, among others.

Castle Howard

Editor-at-Large of Country Life, Clive Aslet explores history and magnificence of Castle Howard, one of the Britain’s greatest houses.


12– 1 PM

The Mastery of Meissen

Reino Liefkes, head of ceramics at the V&A and restorer Sarah Peek join Sotheby’s Richard Hird to explore the fascinating history and technical excellence of the German porcelain manufactory, Meissen.


2–3 PM

The Mark of the Maker

Sotheby’s specialist Jessica Wyndham examines the significance of jewels that bear the signature of their creator.


3–4 PM

Ikon at 50

Journalist Ben Luke interviews Curator Debbie Kermode about 50 years of Ikon, Birmingham’s innovative and inventive contemporary art gallery.


4–5 PM

India Emerging

Ishrat Kanga, Sotheby’s specialist in the art of the Subcontinent, looks at the development of modern and contemporary art in India.



11–12 PM

The Art of Technology

Artist Martha Fiennes, with her producer and collaborator Pete Mugglestone talk to journalist Ben Luke about her creative use of digital innovations.


12–1 PM

Exploring Shackleton

Our Book specialist Richard Fattorini joins Conrad Dickinson, the only Briton to walk to both poles and across Greenland, in celebrating the achievements of Sir Ernest Shackleton.


2–3 PM

Art Market Analysis 

Anders Petterson, Founder and MD of ArtTactic, has been undertaking market research and analysis on the art market since 2001. In this talk he will take participants through some of the key art market trends, provide an insight into some of the key tools and analysis used by ArtTactic and introduce  the ArtForecaster game platform and ‘The Value of Art’ competition.


2–3.30 PM

Wine Tasting

Sotheby’s wine specialist Hugh Machin will be holding a mystery red wine tasting.

There will be a prize draw for correct answers to win a bottle of bubbly


3–4 PM

Jewels of the Jazz Age

The jewellery from an era that epitomises style, with Sotheby’s jewellery specialist Justin Roberts.


4–5 PM

Leighton’s Masterpiece

As a sketch for Frederic Lord Leighton’s Flaming June is rediscovered, Daniel Robbins from the Leighton House Museum joins Sotheby’s Grant Ford and picture dealer Rupert Maas to assess this artist.
