Sotheby’s Watches will be holding the next sale of Important Watches in New York this December and highlights include this Rolex Daytona Chronograph in 14K yellow gold, reference 6241. Manufactured circa 1968, this watch has become synonymous with style and collectability. Nicknamed the ‘Paul Newman,’ for the famous actor and race-car driver’s association with the watch, the Rolex ‘Paul Newman’ Daytona features distinctive color combinations and font to the dial. Over several decades, Newman and Rolex had a (unofficial) relationship, with Newman owning several Daytonas and wearing them in publicity photos and films. Up until Newman’s death in 2008, the actor was continually found sporting the iconic Rolex Daytona, both the vintage and modern iterations.

Chic, elegant and striking in style, Cartier jewels fashioned from luscious colored stone beads have been a common thread in notable jewelry collections from fashion, film and society icons. The first ‘Boule’ ring was created by Cartier for Daisy Fellowes in 1948, with ruby and sapphire beads atop simple polished gold bands. In the early 1960s the design house re-visited the design for the Duchess of Windsor, adding the diamond-set side panels illustrated in the present example. Sotheby’s Geneva sold the Fellowes and Windsor ‘Boule’ rings in 2008 and 1987, respectively. Jewels by Cartier, Paris from the Post-War years have an innate sense of ‘cool’ about them; their bold yet tailored design, often with a hint of whimsy, speaks to the graceful and spirited nature of those they adorn. Alongside the ruby-set ‘Boule’ ring by Cartier, the September Important Jewels sale also offers stylish Art Deco pieces by Van Cleef & Arpels and classically chic diamond-set clusters by Harry Winston. These iconic designs by notable makers showcase both the transformative power of wearing jewelry from day to night and their ability, despite changing fashion trends, to remain eternally stylish.

Breathing a new life into a timeless tradition, the Sotheby’s Diamonds Collection presents a contemporary take on the cocktail ring.  Using modern techniques and innovative design, the Collection puts a fresh face on the classic design to showcase the brilliance and scintillation of the centre diamond.  Uniquely crafted with a scattering of pavé-set diamonds and blackened 18K white gold, the ring is a perfect accessory to any fabulous fête.  Surrounding the centre cushion-cut diamond, Sotheby’s Diamonds has crafted the ring using various sizes of pavé-set rose cut diamonds to add dimension and depth, while the blackened gold adds an unexpected element of contrast to the white diamonds.  The Sotheby’s Diamonds Collection is available to purchase year-round through Sotheby’s Diamonds in New York and Hong Kong, as well as through special selling exhibitions worldwide.  We invite you to schedule a private viewing.
