Untitled (Patrycja And Patryk)
Estimate: 18,000 - 25,000 GBP
The present sequence includes two exceptional photographs, a medium with a particularly strong presence in the collection. Cindy Sherman’s extensive exploration of gender-roles and modes of self-portraiture is represented by Untitled #399 , a work from a series of head-shots that explores the desires and failed ambitions of Hollywood actors. James Welling’s #1A ; #22 represents a very different approach to the medium, in which abstract images are created by exposing photographic paper to light sources without the use of a lens.
Besides these multi-faceted approaches to photography, the present group also includes a portrait by Polish painter Wilhelm Sasnal in his typical grisaille palette, and excellent figurative works on paper by Rosemarie Trockel and Gert and Uwe Tobias. A more abstract approach is represented by one of Anselm Reyle’s iconic stripe canvases, responding to the formalist vocabulary of American abstract painting of the 1950s and 1960s. Demonstrating the collector’s daring acceptance of non-traditional media, the group also includes a miniature installation Fischli & Weiss’ Son et Lumiere/Le Rayon Vert , characteristically makes use of found media, as well as a maquette by Manfred Pernice. British art is represented by two works by Raqib Shaw and Chris Ofili, each blending intriguing non-Western influences in their visually striking compositions. With a broad range of boundary-pushing contemporary artistic practices, the group represents the forward-thinking and ambitious nature of the Sender collection.
