Catalogue Note

THE FIRST TECHNICAL PAPER ON COMPUTER CHESS. Shannon described instructions for programming a computer to play chess. A keen chess player himself, Shannon's paper also placed a "game-tree" complexity number on the game - 10120. This number is now known as "Shannon's number" and is still considered the most precise estimate of the game's complexity.
