Catalogue Note

RARE WORKS BY DE NORRY, a schoolteacher in Lyon until 1574, when he moved to Paris. His first treatise was a business arithmetic (1574); he later published a work in verse on astronomy (1589), and devoted himself more to literary endeavours, becoming one of the mathematicians involved in Baïf’s Parisian academy.

The first work describes a reduction compass used for finding proportions between figures. The compas optique of the second work was used for taking terrestrial and astronomical observations. Two issues of the latter edition are noted: this copy conforms to one in Paris, Bibliothèque St Geneviève (Catalogue des ouvrages imprimés au XVIe siècle: sciences, Paris 1980, 1446); the other is represented by copies in the Bibliothèque nationale de France (V-19007 (2), digitised) and Harvard (Houghton Library, *FC5 Er776 594g).
