Catalogue Note

Sully painted portraits of several members of the Kuhl and Dillard families of Philadelphia, including Henry Kuhl's wife.  The present sale includes a portrait of the sitter's son-in-law Thomas Dillard (lot 203) and his grandaughter Matilda (lot 202).  Henry Kuhl (1764-1856) was chief clerk of the U.S. Comptroller's Office and cashier of the Bank of the United States.  He was also a founder of the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts and of St. Andrews Church, Philadelphia.
