The actual painting is slightly less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The flat panel consists of two horizontal planks. The join has been reinforced to the reverse with 8 small battons. The paint surface is under a slightly discoloured glossy varnish. The paint layer is nicely preserved, particularly the impasto of the highlights, if a little thin in the brown hues in the centre and in some of the figures. Retouchings are visible along the join and there's a restored damage in the sky centre right. Inspection under UV light remains inconclusive due to the thick varnish, but there's possibly some minor strengthening of the figures underneath.
