Catalogue Note

Alexandre Grassy, born in Algeria and son of an Italian goldsmith first arrived in Spain around the early 1920s. He set up his first jewellery store specialising in clocks and watches and in just a few years’ time a second shop in Madrid and a further branch out in France.Construction on the Gran Via in Madrid had started in around 1910 and the impressive Gran Via 1 was built between 1916-1917. This street was famous for its plethora of jewellery and watch shops. It was the perfect location for such a renowned establishment like Grassy and in 1953, they opened their flagship store on the famous Gran Via 1 where they can still be found to this day. Grassy introduced several high-end Swiss watch manufacturers to the Spanish market, such as Vacheron Constantin, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Audemars Piguet. In 1967, the flourishing family firm also became an official distributor for Rolex.

In order to celebrate and commemorate this fruitful partnership, Rolex launched this limited edition Explorer in 2017. It is engraved on the case back with the facade of Gran Via 1 proudly showcasing the Rolex sign. The 100 year anniversary of the Gran Via 1 and the 50 year anniversary of the collaboration between Rolex and the Grassy family are also engraved.

While the watch does not bear a special limited edition number, it is believed only 50 pieces were produced.  This particular watch is in like-new condition including all documentation and original protection stickers.
