The Stella Polare expedition to reach the North Pole was organised by Prince Luigi Amedeo. Amedo acquired the whaler Jason, and renamed her Stella Polare ('Pole Star'). On June 1899 the party landed in Russia, and they later set camp on Rudolf Island. That was their winter camp, from where they would attempt to reach the Pole. Sadly, Amedeo lost two fingers to frostbite and was unable to join. The feat was therefore lead by the Captain of the ship, Umberto Cagni. He and his team set a new record of latitude 86° 34’, beating the one set by Nansen in 1895.
