Condition

The canvas has been lined. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals an even layer of residual varnish and some small spots of cosmetic retouching in the upper right corner, also visible to the naked eye upon close inspection. The signature is partly abraded and although parts of it appear to have been strengthened, it appears to be entirely sitting under the varnish. Overall the painting is in good condition and is ready to hang. Presented in a wooden frame.

Catalogue Note

A spectacular scene full of movement and energy, the present work demonstrates the influence of Eugène Delacroix's Romantic Orientalism on subsequent generations of Orientalists. The work relates to Clairin's battle scene Allah ! Allah !, exhibited at the 1908 Salon in Paris. That work was subsequently turned into a First World War propaganda poster, encouraging Algerians and Tunisians to enlist into the French army.
