Condition

Gouache and pencil on silk, laid down on a cardboard. Overall dimensions are approx. 30 x 60 cm. Surface is slightly convex in the upper part of the composition and there are some bubbles towards the extreme edges probably related to the laying down process. The extreme edges are unevenly cut, notably to the left part of the lower edge. There are some color tests to the lower part of the composition, not visible when framed (photos are available on request, please contact the department). There is one tiny dot of paint loss to the trunk of the central tree. The silk is slightly light stained with some areas of discolorations probably related to mount staining (both away from the centre of the composition and not visible when framed). There are tiny media marks, possibly studio, to the lower right quadrant. There are a few tiny dark green dots above the woman's head to the lower left quadrant. Colours are fresh and well preserved. This work is in overall good condition.

Catalogue Note

“But the major characteristic of 1880 was the growing concern about involving the human figure in landscape painting […]. Rather than a landscape with figures, these are figures in a landscape. They are completely absorbed by the overall vision of light and shadow. They are not part of a genre scene at all: they are the nobleness and grandeur of nature itself.”
Ludovic Pissarro
