Description

  • Height 35 3/8  in., 89.9 cm
carved in the round, standing on an integral cylindrical base, the figure wearing loose robes wrapping in layers around the lean body and secured with a loop at the proper left shoulder, the fabric falling in thick folds around the arms and rhythmically around the feet, the bald head with a wizened face broadening at the cranium and flanked by pendulous ears to either side, a subtle smile playing across the lips and a gentle expression in the eyes, the back carved with a niche, traces of pigment throughout, modern two-part stand (3)

Condition

The sculpture is in stable condition. The hands have been lost (as illustrated) and the wood has vertical age cracks (with some associated fills) and losses particularly to the lower half of the reverse. The center of the interior has been drilled and fitted with a metal support that affixes to the base.The surface has been cleaned.
