Catalogue Note

One of the most successful examples of the chromolithograph ever printed, brilliantly capturing the qualities of the original oil painting. Prang himself described the print thus: "It represents a rocky California valley, where nature has remained undisturbed in her grandeur and solitude. The rays of the setting sun have bathed the river, and the rocks on its bank, in a flood of golden light, while impenetrable darkness already hovers over the foreground."
