Description

One set with a 19th century carved agate cameo of a Moorish woman beneath a brilliant-cut fancy dark orange-brown diamond weighing 3.25 carats, the other set with a 19th century carved onyx cameo of Maecenas beneath a brilliant-cut diamond of grey tint stated to weigh 3.04 carats; each within a surround of briolette and brilliant-cut diamonds of various brown and near colourless tints, post and clip fittings, signed Hemmerle, maker's mark.

Condition

Accompanied by a facsimile of the GIA report check for report no. 2111429883, dated 30th November 2009, stating that the diamond weighing 3.25 carats is natural, fancy dark orange-brown. Each signed Hemmerle, stamped with maker's mark GH and 750. Cameos stated to date from the late 18th/early 19th century. Cameo of Maecenas with hairline crack beneath his chin and Moorish figure with hairline crack to reverse. The 3.04 carat diamond is stated to be natural grey colour. Total diamond weight of briolette diamonds stated to be 18.74 carats, natural brown. Some with surface reaching inclusions and resultant cavities. Total diamond weight of brilliant-cut diamonds stated to be 4.45 carats. Length approximately 68mm, combined gross weight approximately 66 grams. Overall condition good.

Gaius Maecenas (circa 70-8 BC), served as a political advisor to the Emperor Octavian, but is most famous for for his patronge to literature and the arts, acting as a patron to the poets Horace and Virgil, hence his name becoming the eponym for "patron of the arts".
