Original, unlined condition. Isolated finely patterned craquelure is visible in the sky. The canvas has separated from the upper tacking edge in the center and right side. There are small losses along this top edge, and there is some noticeable unevenness to the surface. Under UV: varnish fluoresces green. There is brushy inpainting to address prior frame abrasion scattered along the upper edge. There are a few sparsely applied dots of inpainting in the jacket of the soldier leading the horse at center left, to his immediate right, and on the jacket of the wounded soldier at far right. There is a small brushy area of retouching and a diagonal dash of inpainting near and at the lower right edge. A treatment report from Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. is available for this lot. Catalogue Note

The present lot by Alphonse de Neuville is a fragment of the famous panorama of the battle of Rezonville, painted in collaboration by Édouard Detaille and de Neuville in 1883, thirteen years after one of the most decisive events of the Franco-Prussian war on August 16, 1870. The panorama was not separated into fragments until after the death of de Neuville, and therefore the signature on this work was added by a later hand.

We are grateful to François Robichon, Président des Amis d'Édouard Detaille, for his assistance with cataloguing this work
