Born in Ostend, Belgium, François Etienne Musin came to public prominence as a marine painter in 1840, and went on to enjoy a highly successful international career. The immediacy of his paintings was likely due to the artist's own extensive travels through Europe and North America.
The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.:
This painting is cleaned and the paint layer is stable. The large heavy canvas is unlined and has slightly relaxed on its stretcher causing some waves to the canvas. Under ultraviolet light there are a number of small restorations visible throughout the sky addressing small losses and two small tears. A horizontal stretcher mark is slightly visible running through the center of the painting.
