Catalogue Note

Raymond Mason was born in Birmingham in 1922. He is a major artist of contemporary sculpture and draws inspiration from reality.
Working in Paris since 1946, Raymond Mason spent time working on bas-reliefs related to the Luberon region between 1960 and 1982. This period is an important step in the artist's work, since landscape sculpture was very unusual until then. The contrast is very strong with his work on northern cities, composed of cityscapes and crowds, subjects of predilection of the artist. These landscapes have also played a key role in the artist’s technique. For the first time he used color in his sculptures: "A sculpture is inert, my goal is to bring it to life". Important exhibitions of the artist have been held in many countries, including retrospectives in Paris, London and Birmingham.
