Catalogue Note

"Polke's irony and fragmenting, drawing on all available styles and references from the most diverse fields and combining them at will—these strategies situate him in the postmodernist camp. Yet he also works with his own personal form of alchemy, utilizing and melding the earth's fundamental elements. The artist himself likens his approach to the role of a medium, whose purpose is to achieve wholeness and a totality." Jutta Nestegard in Exh. Cat., Oslo, Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Sigmar Polke, Alchemist, 2001, p. 15
