Sotheby's London, November 24, 1970, lot 257
Condition
The base has been replaced and the interior re-lacquered and repainted. There are long horizontal restored cracks to the exterior of the box along the lower edges and across the back edge of the cover (near the hinges); the lacquer and gilt have expected signs of aging, with several areas of restoration, consolidation and replacement of mother of pearl inlay; there are some areas of in-painting, notably along the borders; and the exterior surface has been generally over-sprayed for stabilization resulting in a matte surface. A later red velvet tray has been affixed to the base of the interior. A pair of chains connecting the cover to the chest have been later-applied to the interior.
