Catalogue Note

A RARE PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD of the Mediterranean cruise of the Augusta-Victoria, by way of Gibraltar, Genoa, Alexandria, Cairo, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Beirut, Constantinople and the Bosphorus, Athens, Malta, Palermo and Naples. As the first of a new generation of luxury liners for the Hamburg America Line the Augusta-Victoria had in 1889 broken the record for the passage to New York and later in that year took part in a race around the world. This off-season pleasure trip in the Mediterranean from 22 January to 22 March 1891, with 241 passengers on board, is considered by many to have been the first ever commercial cruise.
