Catalogue Note

FRITH'S MONUMENTAL PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD OF THE MIDDLE EAST. "Frith’s fame rests chiefly on the many publications which ensued from his three tours to Egypt, Nubia, Palestine and Syria, for these exemplify his finest – and at the same time earliest – work. Frith’s Eastern pictures are superior artistically and technically to those of Maxime Du Camp, and none of the many photographers who visited the same places later in the nineteenth century was able to improve upon his work" (Gernsheim, H. History of Photography, 1955, pp.218–220)
