Condition

Overall in very good condition. A rare form with an exceptional fir burl at the central column. Leather marquetry tops are rare in the overall spectrum of Molesworth's work and this example presents with a graphic, symmetrical design. This top is largely original and presents with a slightly deeper kelly green than in the catalogue illustration. Its surface with scattered scratches, nicks, dents, abrasions, areas of rubbing, and surface soiling concentrated to the recesses of the inlays, all consistent with age and gentle use. The central red inlaid leather motif is a later replacement, though remains consistent with the overall design. There is slight fading to the leather stain across the raised areas of the grain as is common with a table of this age. This is most pronounced to the edges of the tabletop and lightly emanates towards the center of the table, as is visible in the catalogue illustration. All original brass tacks are present, though one is loose and would benefit from stabilization. The fir base presents with an exceptionally large knotty burl with natural irregularities to the grain. There are scattered scuffs, scratches, and surface soiling to the recesses, not visually distracting and consistent with age. The iron platform with some minor pitting, rubbing, and oxidation. The table is accompanied with a contemporary glass top. Originally designed for the interior of O.T.O. Ranch in 1934-1935, it was meant to pair with four games chairs (lot 11). A nicely proportioned example of Molesworth's early style, this table presents very well overall.
