Description

  • 5.5 cm., 2.2in. diameter; 56 grams with later suspension rings attached to the top
The obverse with central oval panel inscribed S.C./FRANCISC/MAVROCENV/DEI GRATIA/DVX. VEN/ET.C with wreath border and supported by two angels with scrollwork below, the reverse with a female figure seated beneath a row of columns and before her the Venetian Lion holds open a book inscribed PAX/TIB/MAR//EVA/GEL/MEV For two similar medals cast in gold of Francesco Morosini see Voltolina P., La Storia di Venezia attraverso le medaglie, vol. II, Venice, 1998, no. 1069. A third gold example was part of the Melvin Gutman collection, sold by Parke-Bernet Galleries Inc., New York 15th May 1970, lot 143 and a fourth was sold at Sotheby’s, London, 1st May 1969, lot 45.
