Description

the domed circular cover finely carved with a full frontal five-clawed scaly dragon in pursuit of a flaming pearl, around the sides of the cover and box stride another eight dragons in mutual pursuit of flaming pearls, all reserved on a ground of turbulent foaming waves, the interior and base lacquered black

Condition

This large lacquer box has restoration encircling the central dragon medallion of the cover and two horizontal cracks running through the upper layers, a 2cm., rim chip to the cover and overpainting encircling the rim of the cover, covering numerous vertical hairline rim cracks and other areas of damage; the box has overpainting to the majority of the exterior, a 4cm., rim crack with a 3x2cm., triangular associated area of loss, three shallow rim chips, the footring has lost to approximately half of the lower section together with other chips, breaks and associated loss to the lacquer, the interior has crazing and star cracks.
