Condition

The panel is formed of a single plank, is very slightly bevelled on the left and right margins, and is flat and stable. The paint surface is clean and the varnish only slight discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some small retouchings scattered throughout, most notably scattered along the horizontal wood grain in the red jacket of the child centre right, and the figure directly to his right, as well as in the central figure’s hat. In overall good condition.

Catalogue Note

There are two further treatments of this composition by the artist; one which sold Christie's, London, 7 December 2011, lot 107,1 and the other, which features additional figures to the right, a more crowded background, and a running dog lower centre, is in the Städel Museum, Frankfurt.2 There are also three similar compositions in reverse which show the same configuration of window dwellers; one is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam,one which sold Christie's, New York, 21 January 2011, lot 21,4 and one signed and dated version was with P. de Boer 1969–70.5 1 K.
