Description

  • Venetian School, 14th Century
  • Portrait of a gentleman
  • oil on canvas
  • 102.5 x 90.8 cm.; 40 3/8  x 35 3/4  in.

Condition

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. There are some small surface scuffs in the centre of the man's coat, and in the stone ledge lower left by his glove. Discoloured retouchings are visible along all four margins, scattered through the stone ledge, in his hands, face and beard, and scattered in the background. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the opaque varnish and all that is visible are recent pin prick retouchings scattered along the lower right-hand margin and in the man's outstretched arm. A degree of wear is visible, particularly in the man's face and in the stone ledge, but the painting is in overall fair condition and will improve greatly with cleaning. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame with some losses.
