Description

  • Bust of Cosimo III de'Medici
  • terracotta, on a serpentine marble socle

  • Attributed to Giovanni Battista Foggini (1625-1725) Italian, Florence, early 18th century

Condition

Overall the condition of the bust is good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is a slip to the surface which may conceal some condition points. The tip of the nose has been reattached or restored. There are a few chips, including to the ends of the sleeves and to the folds of drapery at the front. The socle is in good condition with some wear, including chips along the edges.

Catalogue Note

A related marble bust of Cosimo III by Foggini, dated 1680-82, is housed in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (1993.332.1). Another version of the present model was exhibited as by Foggini at Peel & Humphris Ltd (undated gallery catalogue).
