Description

  • Flask carved with Sea Monsters and Nymphs
  • agate, with an associated lion-head finial
  • 4 by 8.7cm., 1½ by 3½in. lion finial: 3 by 3.5cm., 1 1/8  by 1 3/8 in.
  • Southern Italian, perhaps Naples, late 18th/ early 19th century

Condition

Overall the condition of the agate is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is veining to the stone, consistent with the material, including a slightly open vein running from the middle of the underside, around the circumference of the bottom edge and up to the top rim (this is a natural vein but slightly resembles a fissure). There is a minor chip to the bottom, and there may be a few further minor chips to the edges of the relief. There are a few minor chips to the associated finial, and there are four plugs to the edge of the finial.
