Description

  • Falcon hunting
  • Unframed: 26.1 x 21.9 cm.; 10 1/4 x 8 5/8 in. Framed: 29.1 x 24.5 cm.; 11 1/2 x 9 5/8 in.
bears signature in monogram lower centre: 'PHS. W.' oil on oak panel Although the present painting does not appear to be a direct copy after a specific work by Wouwerman, it clearly draws inspiration from the hunting scenes which formed a staple throughout the artist's career, and were foremost among the works upon which his contemporary and later fame rested. Falcon hunting was a popular activity among all classes of the Dutch Republic, and pictures depicting this sport were especially popular with the art-collecting bourgeoisie, providing a release from the urban reality of daily life.

Provenance

Count Guglielmo Lochis (1789–1859), Bergamo;
Borromeo collection, Milan.

Condition

All paintings available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 5 - 7 and 10 – 13 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment. The panel is uncradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is quite dirty and the varnish is discoloured. There is a vertical line of retouching just visible to the naked eye, probably to an old surface scratch, running down the right-hand margin, measuring 17 cm. There is visible frame abrasion, and the corner of the panel is uneven upper left. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals only very few, fine spot retouchings in the sky in addition to the aforementioned scratch.
