Condition

All paintings available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 5 - 7 and 10 – 13 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment. The stretcher is covered by two planks of wood on the reverse, making it hard to confirm, but the canvas appears to be lined. The paint surface is relatively clean, and the varnish only slightly discoloured. There is quite a well-defined network of craquelure throughout, which has been carefully retouched in the angel's flesh tones - visible under ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet light also reveals retouching around the angel's silhouette, and around the lilies, to parts of the wing, and to a small scratch in the green cloak measuring 3 cm. There are also retouchings scattered around the margins.
