oil on canvas A copy after Rembrandt's signed and dated work of 1631, today in the Royal Collection Trust at Windsor Castle (inv. no. RCIN 404522).1 The popularity in the seventeenth century for exotic figures and character studies in fanciful dress was largely the result of the visits by eastern emissaries to the Republic, and contact with foreign cultures by Dutch merchants abroad. 1 https://www.royalcollection.org.uk/collection/404522/a-young-man-wearing-a-turban

Condition

All paintings available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 5 - 7 and 10 – 13 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment. The canvas is lined, the paint surface is quite dirty and the varnish is discoloured. There is a small, circular tear in the canvas above the sitter's proper right eye, measuring 0.4cm., as well as further small spots of paint loss upper left, lower left, lower right, one in his turban and one in the centre of the right margin. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a thick, opaque varnish, underneath which retouchings are visible to the sitter's proper left cheek and chin, scattered in the background on the right-hand side, and small spots in his shoulders.
