Catalogue Note

RARE: we have no record of any other autograph quotation from the Fifth Symphony appearing at auction.  It is a famous and striking beginning to one of Mahler's most popular symphonies. This one was acquired at Sotheby's, 22 November 1989, lot 124.  The work was first performed at Cologne on 18 October 1904.
