Condition

The relining is firm and stable. The paint surface has been a bit pressed, however the detail in the flowers, sweets and marble ledge has been very well preserved, and colors are fresh and vibrant. There is some thinness in the darker areas of the background and curtain, as well as in the vase and paper.. Under UV light: there are some retouches in the curtain at far left side, and on the ledge at lower center. A few very small ones on the flowers and sweets, but these areas overall look good. This painting is presentable and can be hung as is.Offered in a painted black and gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note

This still life of fruit and flowers has been dated by Alberto Cottino (see Literature) as a mature work by Recco, datable to the late 1670s or beginning of the 1680s.  A similar work by the artist, combining a vase of flowers with an array of sweetmeats, and a curtain pulled aside at upper left was sold at Sotheby' London on 8 July 2015, lot 30.
