Catalogue Note

One of Bulgari’s most iconic and heralded collections is that of the Monete. Anchored by alluring antique Greek and Roman coins, which are a nod to the brand’s Greco-Italian roots, the Monete Collection has been coveted by collectors since its inception by Nicola Bulgari in the 1960s. As Nicola Bulgari expresses in the preface to Marion Fasel’s 2014 book, Monete Collection, “I was so impressed by those tiny objects that documented, within their rounded contours, dynastic triumphs and the mythology and customs of past epochs and civilizations, and that still have the power to make us dream.” The coins are given new life when incorporated into bold, modern designs through the use of sumptuous mountings and even silk cords, at times enhanced by diamonds and colored stones. The exceptional design of the necklace offered here, composed of platinum and covered in its entirety with diamonds—both unusual choices for Bulgari—was perfectly suited to Barbara Sinatra, the wife of an Italian American legend.
