Description

  • height 104 in., 264.2 cm; width each panel 18 1/2 in.; 47 cm
the hinged rectangular panels carved with a continuous and lively scene depicting a birthday celebration, a seated dignitary amid a grand pavilion being entertained and receiving guests bearing tribute, the reverse with a scenic panorama of Hangzhou's West Lake, all in polychrome on a dark brown lacquer ground

Condition

The panels have vertical splits to the wood (as illustrated) with associated consolidation. The lacquer and pigments have cracks and some flakes (commensurate with age), and there are some areas of re-touching. The hinges have been replaced, and some are loose or missing.
