Catalogue Note

This cartoon appeared at a time when Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists was nearing the peak of their popularity, attracting large scale support at rallies and backing from national newspapers such as The Daily Mail and The Daily Mirror. Two weeks after this cartoon was published, a large Fascist rally at Olympia descended into violence, losing the BUF a large amount of support. Shepard’s cartoon immediately draws comparisons with George Orwell’s Animal Farm, though the book was not published until 1945. It has been suggested that Orwell may well have been influenced by this cartoon when it came to writing his novel.
