Condition

The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.: This work is quite heavily painted in the central part of the composition. The heavy paint layer has developed cracking, most of which appears to be stable. There are two losses at the top of the central element that remain unretouched at present. There do not seem to be any other losses. The paint layer should be further stabilized before the work is transported.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

Mordecai Ardon’s landscapes from the 1960s and 70s border on abstraction. Experimenting with the juxtaposition of luminous colors and varied textures, Ardon creates a dynamic surface that simultaneously captures a glowing incandescence and a nocturnal atmosphere. “Landscapes form the major portion of Ardon’s oeuvre and are the vehicle of his rich coloristic vision. Numerous paintings of the last decade show a harmonization of brilliant tones with black; phosphorescent colors flare up from seemingly unfathomable depths and vibrate in our presence.” (Michele Vishny, Ardon, 1973, p . 47)
