Condition

CASE The case is in good overall condition, and in our view, has seen a polishing in its past. The lugs remain thick and well proportioned. The bevels are not strongly defined, but still present. The bracelet has quite a bit of stretch to it from wear, and scratches throughout. DIAL The dial is in good overall condition, and in our view, has been spot cleaned in an area. The '1' in 610m is slightly short. The luminous hour markers have aged to a lovely shade of beige. MOVEMENT The movement is running at time of cataloging, however it was not tested for the accuracy of time or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement.

Catalogue Note

Toward the end of the 1960s, the reference 1665, Sea-Dweller was introduced to the market by Rolex. Many variations of this reference were made and the earliest variations known to the market were prototypes with either the word “SEA-DWELLER” written in red or the case without a helium escape valve. After such prototypes were released, 4 different variations of reference 1655 in double red lines were recognized. The present watch is offered with an attractive and well preserved dial. The dial is a MK IV that can be found fitted with both thinner and thicker case versions. This watch is fitted with a thicker case, giving the wearer a robust presence on the wrist.
