Catalogue Note

When reference 3970 was introduced to the market in 1986, it was not the most sought after wristwatch as chronographs weren’t popular at the time. The reference remained in Patek Philippe’s collection for 20 years and 4 different variations of the dials and cases were made. Each variation has a different characteristic and would provide glimpse of the market trend and technological innovation at the time. The current watch which we are offering is a third series 3970J that was produced from 1989 to 1995. The third series 3970J was produced in all 4 metals. It can be distinguished by its pointed baton indexes and baton hands instead of the leaf hands and most importantly it was presented with both solid and sapphire crystal screw-back cases by Patek Philippe.
