Catalogue Note

Mare Nostrum, in Latin, "Our Sea" was a Roman name for the Mediterranean Sea. The present reference named Mare Nostrum has also exemplified its close link with the ocean. The original 1943 Mare Nostrum prototype, designed for the Italian Navy in a 52 mm diameter case but never produced, used an Angelus 215 chronograph movement within a large case with smooth bezel and stepped dial. Back in the Pre-Vendome times, Panerai recreated a 42-mm edition under the references PAM006 (blue dial), PAM007 (white dial) and PAM008 (black dial). The model continued limited produced with several variations until the late 1990s when it was discontinued.

The second-generation Mare Nostrum, announced in 2008 and released in 2010 SIHH as a limited edition of 99 examples, faithfully re-creates the original prototype while being fitted with a modified Minerva based caliber chronograph movement. The present watch numbered 48/99 is offered in close to new condition.
