Catalogue Note

Accompanied by a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives. Piquing interests of so many watch aficionados, vintage watches often share the same reference numbers that have been used with different complications. Years ago, collectors and scholars barely aware that the time only reference 530 existed – reference 530 are usually reserved for the brand’s legendary chronograph wristwatch which was introduced into the market in 1938. Whereas the present reference 530 is viewed as the “sibling” of the traditional reference 570, close examination of the two shows subtle differences, such as the case size and concave bezel. The present reference 530 is encased in a 36.5 mm 14k yellow gold case, approximately 1.5mm larger in diameter than the more common reference 570. Its bezel is also concave instead of convex, adding to its distinguished size.

Confirmed by the Extract from the Archives, the present watch still preserves the original silvered dial which is reminiscent of the traditional high quality Patek Philippe pocket watch dials. The stunning two-tone dial design of the present watch gives the illusion of a sunken center reminiscent of high quality enamel dialled watches of the 1920s. Consigned in an original and beautifully preserved condition, the rarity of the watch has made it especially appealing – only 8 pieces of 14k yellow gold reference 530 has ever appeared in auction. To the best of our knowledge, the present watch has only once appeared at auction in 2008.

Modern timepieces never cease to astonish watch collectors with its innovative material and cutting-edge technologies, but perhaps there is something so simple yet intriguing about a time only wristwatch like this – that in certain ways becomes more aesthetically pleasing than modern complications and thus leaving an indelible imprint on watchmaking history.
