Condition

Overall in very good condition. The surfaces with minor oxidation and fine scratches throughout; two hairline scratches near the center of the dial measuring approximately 3/8 as visible in the catalogue illustration. The proper lower left panel with two shallow indentations, measuring approximately 1/8 in. diameter each, not visually disruptive; relief detailing throughout with traces of polished residue. All of the above is consistent with age and gentle handling. One key is provided. Functionality of the movement is not guaranteed and it could need service at the buyer's discretion. A restrained work with an iconic, stylized decorative motif, this rare example presents well overall.

Catalogue Note

This unique silver clock is another example of a Knox design bringing together different stylistic elements from among the many that Liberty & Co offered.  Its forthright volume calls to mind the standing stones of Isle of Man while the chased design on the front is very similar to fabric designs Knox created for Liberty’s while working at The Silver Studio. It was so satisfying to Knox that he used this pattern on a variety of other silver objects during his tenure with Liberty’s.  The abstracted plant form with its symmetrical leaf structure is the closest Knox will come to the more classical decorative style of Art Nouveau.
