A number of cinnabar lacquer boxes of this design are found together with a corresponding tray, suggesting their intended use as utensils for the tea ceremony in temples in Japan. Two sets, one from the Tokyo National Museum and another from a private collection, are illustrated in the exhibition Carved Lacquer, Tokugawa and Nezu Museums, 1984, cat. nos 86 and 87. A box and tray bearing a Zhou Ming mark was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 1st December 2010, lot 3076.
