Catalogue Note

Lattré's was the first map of the United States published after the ratification of the Treaty of Paris. Dedicated to Benjamin Franklin, one of the American signatories to the treaty, 'Carte des Etats-Unis' is "one of the most attractively designed and executed maps of the period" (Ristow). This example is from the third of three states, with Vermont being added to the table (still headed "Les treize Etats-Unis") and the new federal city of Washington, D.C., being located on the map.
