Description

Designed as the bust of a figure styled as a blackamoor, the face of carved ebony, the robes and turban set with carnelian intaglios, brilliant-cut diamonds and a cultured pearl, wearing earrings set with brilliant-cut diamonds of pink tint, the reverse engraved with a design of the Venetian doge kneeling before Saint Mark.

Condition

Unsigned. Ebony black, opaque, with grain and tooling marks visible, some areas of glue residue visible to earrings, back of neck and points along the join with the turban. Some minor pitting, due to the wood structure. Diamonds bright and lively, estimated total diamond weight approximately 3.00 - 4.00 carats, mixed colour and clarity grades, some I included. Carnelian reddish-orange to brown, translucent, the largest measuring approximately 13 x 10mm, all with minor chips visible to edges and carvings, mostly in good condition. Scratches and areas of dark discoloration to metal, associated with age and on the back of the turban and neck, with solder. Pink diamonds in earrings have not been tested for natural colour origin, each estimated to weigh approximately 0.03-0.05 carats. Cultured pearl at top of turban of hemispherical shape, with white body colour, green and rose overtones and areas of light yellow discoloration, scratches, pitting and unevenness to the nacre surface, diameter approximately 13.4mm. Brooch fittings in good working order, closing securely. Scratches to metal consistent with wear. Overall in good condition. Overall dimensions approximately 94 x 42 x 35mm, gross weight approximately 63 grams.
