Catalogue Note

"Playing off the convention of the girlie magazine/playboy 'centerfold,' Sherman re-presents herself in a series of guises...Clad in schoolgirl clothes – shorts, tartan skirt, gingham dress – these 'characters' are wet, dishelveled, sweaty, smudged, or glowing in the melodramatic, high contrast, key lighting created by colored gels. There is something vaguely erotic about the pictures and the prone position of most of the women in their simultaneous suggestion of fear and seduction. Caught in a raw emotional state, unaware of anyone's gaze, these women emerge out of the darkness, like the subconscious itself."
