Condition

This work is in excellent condition overall. The work is hinged verso to the mat intermittently along the edges. There are faint scattered creases and undulations throughout, specifically in the lower left and right quadrants, as well as along the left and right edges of the sheet, inherent to the artist's working method and choice of medium. There are artist pinholes in all four corners of the sheet. Framed under Plexiglas.

Catalogue Note

“They say that there the waves rise high as mountains, formed of fearful symmetries that break to perfection with pure lines of impossible clarity that belie the treachery of their undercurrents, proffering irresistible challenges to the wise and foolhardy alike that come to measure frailty and failure against the ideals of an inconceivable grace. Though this place has had many names over time, changing according to the cultures that imagine it and the successive generations who somehow found themselves there, many simply call it Pettibon, after the artist who went there to meet its intimidating glory and belitting gaze, and who came back with the pictures to prove.” Carlo McCormick, “Waveform: Riding the Sublime to the Song of the Sea” in Exh. Cat., New York, Venus over Manhattan, Raymond Pettibon: Surfers 1985-2015, 2015, p. 9
